Search Engine Optimisation Clarified

SEO is an evolving study of the factors which search engines use to ‘rank’ you in their natural listings.

When we search for anything, up come the natural search lists. They’re in addition to the PPC lists. On the major Search Engines, you’ll see a box at the top, and a column down the right hand side. These are the paid adverts. The ‘natural’ listings are straight from the main index. They show sites listed in the order of importance and relevance - according to their algorithm.

Of course, we would like to be as high as possible on page one. No-one’s going to find us if we’re listed on page seven. We can’t know for sure about all the criteria Google and the like use to rank us. It’s not in the SE’s interest to tell people everything they do.

Nevertheless, an entire industry has evolved around Search Engine listings. On the one hand there are SE’s purposely filing a wide array of new patents. Causing much mystification about their methods! On the other side you have an SEO industry. This utilises a series of tests and measurements to determine the most pertinent factors.

The objective is to maximise both ‘on-page’ and ‘off-page’ optimisation. Off-web criteria also play a part in SE listings, (e.g. demographics). This doesn’t come under the remit of SEO though. For a full discussion of Off-Page factors, please refer to our other article on this subject.

On Page Optimisation

If we can make changes to our site to make it more friendly to Search Engines, this is called ‘on-page’ optimisation. It’s not too complex - it just requires setting up your web site correctly. For example: The correct use and density of keywords and internal linking; H1 and H2 header tags and meta tags.

It doesn’t matter if all that sounds very confusing.

In reality, this is very easy to control, but not wildly effective. Some would argue its effect is so small it’s irrelevant. There was a time when SE’s were ‘duped’ by On-Page optimisation. Not any longer though.

On-Page can still be important though if Off-Page has been taken care of. If that’s the case, internal linking and a certain amount of on-page fine-tuning can reap rewards.

Some Words Of Caution…

Avoid doing SEO on keywords that have millions of listings. For example, on Google’s Search Engine you’ll see 70 million listings in the UK for the term Car Insurance. It’s not rocket science to realise that competing in this area wouldn’t be productive.

However… When I search for “Southampton Car Insurance”, it comes down to a more manageable 300K. (If car insurance in Southampton was my business!) A big number still it seems - but actually quite a small number when it comes to web searches.

I could expect to get ranked far more easily for the longer phrase. In actual fact, it takes very deep pockets to get a premier listing for a term like ‘car insurance’. I would actually be competing with the insurance conglomerates! So not a great idea - especially, in fact, when there are much better ways to go about it.

We should concentrate on more accurate ‘phrases’ that give us less competition. These ‘long tail’ phrases might contain a number of specific keywords. They could be anything from two to seven words in length. Typically they will be 3 or 4 words long.

In general, our recommendation is to begin SEO’ing with keyword phrases that reveal fewer than 500,000 results. (If the sites on the front page haven’t used SEO techniques, then we might go with bigger yields). Over time we’ll gain ground on the larger search terms. This will happen automatically through building back links. If we put in enough effort, we can go after those big phrases in 3-12 months time. This strategy is also far more targeted at the start. We go for the phrases that people who are looking to buy are using.

Don’t just limit building back links to your website’s home page - link them up to various sub pages as well. Google and the other Search Engines like this ‘deep linking’. Try back-linking product group pages. They often have links to several other sub-pages about individual products. So don’t limit the back links to one page. Google and the other SE’s are looking more and more at how individual pages on your site are listed and treated.

The Best Method For Social Media Marketing

Many changes have occurred in the media business in recent years. It is hard to keep up with them since they are occurring so fast. Though social media marketing is a relatively new concept, the average person can now distribute their material over the internet all over the world almost instantly. Media publishing giants like News Corporation and Liberty Media have controlled distribution of news and information all over the globe for 200 years. They have used large media distribution networks in order to do this and they will continue to grow.

Social media has changed the way we communicate. Anyone can distribute material for a business or personally by using a site such as Digg. This opens freedom of speech and distribution of information to everyone. One of the advantages of using this media to distribute your material is that you get feedback on your information in a very timely manner and can tell if it was widely accepted or not. More and more traffic will come to your site when you get lots of favorable reviews. If you get a lot of negative reviews it may be a signal that you need to change your content.

If your information makes it to the first page on Digg this can easily generate up to 200,000 different visitors to our site daily. Other sites such as Slashdot can have the same effect on driving traffic to your site. Since it is so important that your material receives as much traffic as possible some people have tried to manipulate the amount of positive responses to their site. Of course if you are caught doing this you will be banned from the site.

Social media products have recently been created making the distribution of material for your business much easier than in the past. There was a time when internet marketers had to spend many hours submitting their content individually using software to the sites they wanted to use and the tools available to help them such as Social Bookmarker and AddURL still took a lot of time

More and More social media marketing tools will continue to become available. A product called Traffic Android has been released that has the ability to automate time consuming processes such as sign up and submission.

Business competitors are now able to monitor what their competition is doing by reading their blogs on the internet. We are also changing our habits in regard to photos and their distribution. One no longer has to have a very sophisticated camera when a less expensive model, or even a phone, will produce a very good image on the internet and distribution of the photograph is done almost instantly.

It has become so simple to engage with a lot of people through the social media that it has become addictive for many. It can be fun and is a hot topic of conversation among a lot of people. They love to examine every aspect of social media in big feature and love to share their opinions with others. It is easy to become obsessed with this technology and what it has to offer.

Do You Know This Google Ranking Technique To Find Keywords?

Would you be interested in understanding what keywords Google think are the most related to your google search query? Would you like this list of results to be kept updated all the time? How about accessing the information anytime you need it?

And in addition what about if I told you that you could retrieve all the information using nothing but your favorite browser and a standard Google search?

Does that take your fancy? Good, lets get into the detail….

Firstly lets take a step back and discuss relevance, as this term is at the very core of Googles results returned from your searches.

Google wants to provide the person searching with extremely accurate and relevant results that it can. They know that if they do not provide this information, it’s probable that users will stop using their services altogether, and no searchers means no ad revenues which is their primary source of income!

For a classic example of a search engine losing market share, spend a second for AltaVista? In its time it was the most used search engine, and very quickly lost the crown to Google because they dropped the ball with relevance.

I doubt there is such a thing as search engine loyalty (at least not for the average search engine user). If a better solution arrives, the everyday people will just start using that search engine.

Trust me when I say The Powers To Be At Google are very conscious of this, and put enormous thought and manpower into ensuring that when you search for something, the results returned are highly related to your search term.

Google have to keep the everyday user happy so that they use Google again and again.

Web masters have, of course found methods to “game” Google in the past, so that their own sites come up in place of what should be the most relevant results, and such tricks are still used in modern times.

Mostly these techniques are found by Google who is getting cleverer at finding these types of hacks.

Google seems to get it right a lot of the time, and certainly more than the other major search engines at this point in time.

Ok so given that Google is now providing the most relevant information and has the biggest user base compared to any other search engine, and that its obvious that their primary mission is information relevance to their users, doesn’t it make sense to go to their search results and be using this information more when conducting keyword research?

For example lets say your searching for the keyword phrase web traffic

When I entered that keyword phrase into google, I got a list of current pages that Google tell us are the most relevance to that search term (along with a host of ads).

But in additional to this information at the bottom of the page they also provide (and here is the key)….

Searches RELATED to: targeted web traffic (Their words).

Hmm interesting a list of keywords that Google think are relevant to my search.

Google actually show you the search terms that they believe are the most relevant to your search.

If you do some research about this, there is lots of speculation on how google decide on what words are displayed, but no matter what you think I think it’s certainly worth investigating further, isn’t it?

In my testing I found the keywords it came up with seemed to be phrases heavily searched on.

In the case of web traffic, the keyword phrases I got back were

increase web traffic free web traffic buy web traffic google web traffic web traffic report web traffic generator web traffic monitoring measure web traffic

They all seem pretty related to my original search.

And you can drill down by clicking on a search term to get relevant keywords to that keyword. For example I could have selected increase web traffic and received a list of related phrases that relate to that term.

This is getting interesting. Before you discount this technique compared to using your favorite keyword research program, It’s my suggestion consider the following.

1) The information from these searches are directly from Googles data banks, so the information has not been corrupted in any way.

Many keyword research tools do not use information from Google at all (Wordtracker) or combine information from many sources. Here we have information direct from the source!

2) The information returned from Google is of course very up to date, unlike a lot of other keyword research data that can be months out of date.

I am not suggesting that you abandon all other keyword tools in favor of this technique, but I do suggest you check it out. With all the latest whiz bang all conquering, overly hyped software tools that seemingly gets released everyday, sometimes it pays to take a step back and go back to just using a very simple method like searching in Google!

In my case, I actually use this method in conjunction with other keyword tools, and get the best out of both worlds. My two favorite keyword research tools currently are Nichebot and Market Samurai (google them).

I find the best use of this method is when searching new niches, or when trying to establish the viability of entering a particular market.

One final thing to note is that unfortunately not all keywords are supported. Sometimes no related search terms come back for a given keyword, but given that it’s free I’m happy to overlook that oversight.

And occasionally I have to say the search terms returned seem a little bizarre. But this seems to be in more unusual niches that perhaps Google have not collected enough information for (my speculation).

Get out there and take a look at the related search function in Google. The search terms returned might end up being very useful.

A Guide to SEO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is about ranking your website high up in searches for the keywords you are targeting with your website. SEO uses a combination of internal page and external linking factors to help get to your desired position. SEO is about ranking on the first page or higher (the goal being #1) on search engines and by that I really mean Google. Google accounts for 72% of search engine traffic in the United States and over 90% in Europe. Focusing your efforts on Google will give you the most traffic which is why Google and SEO go together.

How do we make our website appear in the search engine results? Or how do we optimize our website? We must first ensure that search engines crawl through our website. We can do this by submitting the websites to search engines. There are many factors that account in SEO and a good website will do all the practices to ensure that your website ranks high so people can find it.

Internal SEO is making sure your main keyword and related keywords are all over the place, the pages on your site are interlinked, and your photos have good Alt tags. If you do that, youll make your site Google friendly. This will help you rank high. The search engines need to know what your website is about and the easiest way to do that is to have the words you are talking about all over your website.

The latest buzz in SEO is that content is king. More the information content on a web page, better the chances of it being ranked higher on search engines. That’s why one can find website owners looking furiously for articles and web content online. However, remember that content is only half of the equation. Without good links to your website, search engines won’t find you and you won’t rank in them. Concentrate most of your effort on building links and you will find you will rank very high.

The most important thing you can do is get keyworded links to your site. If you really want to rank high in the search engines, links will do it. All my attention is always on building links, building links, and building more links. If you are thinking about should you do for SEO right now, the answer is build links. It is the biggest determining factor in how Google ranks your website. If you are not good in other areas of SEO, you can overcome these weaknesses with building links.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the only way to rank high in search engine results. There are millions of websites out there and if you want to differentiate yourself form them you need to do work to “sell” your website to the search engines so they see you are an authority and push it up. Doing this will ensure a steady stream of visitors to your website.
